Student Social and Professional Groups

One of the most significant strengths of our School is a well connected and organised student body which interacts beyond the courses and programs we teach at both social and professional levels.

The links below are to social and professional groups run by or which serve our current and past students which you should consider learning more about and joining. Membership of these groups significantly expands your university experience and provides the networking necessary to get a sound start in your profession. Many have special groups for young professionals.

The social groups typically have no or minimal fees and professional societies have significantly reduced fees for students.

Social Groups:
  • Architecture Society
    RAIA Qld Chapter
Student Organised Network for Architecture (SONA)

  • Environmental Management Students
The Queensland University Environmental Students Association (QUESA) - provides a variety of activities for students and staff from all faculties undertaking environmental related studies, including science, environmental science, environmental management and environmental engineering. Activities include social events (eg BBQs, Annual Eco Ball), networking sessions/evenings/seminars that allow students to meet prospective employers to access part time and full time employment, and opportunities to discuss experiences from past students that will increase QUESA member’s work options etc. QUESA is run by students with the assistance of staff. Contact Peter Wulf, School of GPA on 3365 3797 or peter.wulf@uq.edu.au

  • Geography Students Association
The lack of a “sense of place” for keen geographers at UQ has led to the dawning of a new era of social & academic activity for 2007 in the form of the UQ Geography Society. Anyone taking geography papers at any level or with an interest in geography is welcome to join the club, which will be involved in a wide variety of leisurely pursuits (e.g. BBQs, trivia nights, Easter egg hunt, various daringly heroic escapades). The club will also provide academic opportunities, such as research & industry seminars and chances to interact with postgrads and staff in social settings.

As a brand spanking new club, we are currently in the process of becoming affiliated with the UQ Student Union, which should be sorted out by the end of April 2007. We are also partly funded by the School of Geography, Planning & Architecture. Membership to the club is $2 (tax deductible of course, but unfortunately not payable in installments), and will go towards discounted activities.

So if you harbour a secret (or not so secret) enthusiasm for geography (human or physical, we’re not fussy), then go see Joh and Lynda in Room 35-530, who can answer questions and take any membership payments.
